Traffic Management

The BorderWare Firewall Server uses a combination of embedded servers, application gateways and hybrid proxy technologies to provide the most flexible and secure firewall architecture available. This unique approach to firewall design allows the Firewall Server to provide security, flexibility and high performance in a single solution.

Secure Application Proxies
The Firewall Servers’ core traffic technology is based on application level proxies. These proxies provide added protection by inspecting all inbound and outbound traffic at the protocol level; ensuring that your applications and end-users are protected. This means applications like your organization’s web server can only be accessed through valid web/HTTP requests, thereby removing the risk associated with exposing your organization’s valuable assets to the Internet.

Enhanced Stateful Inspection Proxies
The BorderWare Firewall Server also offers enhanced stateful inspection technology – the Direct Packet Option. The Direct Packet Option supports over 500,000 concurrent connections at throughputs up to 500MB for any type of traffic. With configurable NAT and port redirection and powerful access controls, the Direct Packet Option delivers flexible support for special requirements not met by application proxies.

Advanced Protocol Proxies
The Firewall Server includes several advanced protocol proxies to provide added functionality and security for complex protocols. These proxies include services such as IPSec, PPTP and Video Conferencing (NetMeeting). Other firewalls make managing and enforcing these services difficult and cumbersome. The Firewall Server’s advanced proxies offer an organization the ability to run these services with greater control and without limitations.

Embedded Internet Servers
A unique feature of the BorderWare Firewall Server is its embedded servers for DNS, SMTP relay and FTP. Providing these essential services as part of the firewall removes the requirement to set up separate systems and the associated challenge of configuring and securing them for internet access. These servers are hardened against attack, provide additional security features and provide additional value for both small and large organizations.

Web Caching and Authentication
The Firewall Server supports web caching and web access authentication. Using web Caching on the firewall can reduce the amount of bandwidth used on an organization’s Internet connection. The Firewall Server’s web authentication uses both LDAP and RADIUS to provide complete integration with an organization’s existing authentication services, such as Active Directory.

URL Filtering
The Firewall Server integrates SurfControl as a value-added option, to provide organizations with industry leading URL filtering capabilities. SurfControl integrates seamlessly with the Firewall Server giving an organization the ability to transparently filter out restricted web content.

SurfControl offers nearly forty distinct content filters for rapid restriction of content including, among others, Adult Content, Gambling and Criminal Skills.

These rules are updated on a daily basis using BorderWare’s SecurityConnection™. By blocking unwanted content at the gateway, SurfControl can reduce the amount of bandwidth used by an organization, while increasing employee productivity.

Ease-of-Use
BWClient – the advanced remote management console - provides a range of administrative tools for simplifying the specification of proxies, the Direct Packet Option and other network traffic controls. Pre-defined proxies allow administrators to enable complex services, like NetMeeting, with a single click; proxy wizards guide administrators through the specification of custom proxies. BWClient guards against mis-configuration and the inadvertent opening of unsafe services.
