SteelGate provides a wide range of sophisticated tools for managing, monitoring and administering both single and multiple systems, and for both local and remote deployments. SteelGate may be
administered by the expert and non-expert user alike, and provides comprehensive reports, logs and other information for management purposes.
Management
SteelGate is managed using the BWClient remote management console. BWClient is a Windows-based application with added authentication, through SecurID or CryptoCard, and SSL encryption to allow
secure remote management from anywhere in the world. BWClient provides advanced management tools and is ideal for the expert and non-expert user alike. BWClient can be used to manage and monitor
multiple firewall units whether in a cluster or in various remote locations.
Logging
SteelGate provides comprehensive logging of all events that occur on the system. Logs can be either kept local on the system itself, or can be sent to a third party system for consolidation
and storage purposes. Log files can be used to determine access events or potential threats to SteelGate. Advanced logging options provide administrators with the necessary information to
determine what services should be allowed or denied through the firewall.
Reporting
SteelGate integrates with the InsideOut Firewall Reporter to provide enhanced logging and reporting. The InsideOut Firewall Reporter is an advanced report generation tool hosted on an
external Windows system that gives detailed reporting statistics in real time.
All access information can be logged so that reports can be generated for any host or for any service that
is accessed via the firewall. This provides administrators with an easy way to monitor overall Internet usage as well as monitor individual usage ensuring adherence to an organization’s
Internet usage policy.
Reporting information can be gathered and stored on any timescale to provide administrators with the ability to locate historical logging events as well as create
reports on large timescales.
Monitoring
SteelGate supports SNMP to provide simple monitoring from the BWClient utility or advanced monitoring from a third-party SNMP management station. SNMP is the industry standard for remote
monitoring and SteelGate can send detailed information on many aspects of system health and activity. SNMP can also be used to detect attacks in real time, delivering an additional layer of protection.
Alarms
Alarm rules on SteelGate provide administrators with the means to detect attempted attacks and break-ins on the firewall. Alarms can be used to determine whether a suspicious user is port-scanning
the firewall or attempting to connect to the firewall on a closed service. Alarm rules are logged and generate SNMP traps, as well as send out email notifications. This provides administrators
with instant notification should a break-in attempt occur on the firewall.
