VoIP SecurityVoIP services brings the flexibility of IP networking to a well established service: voice telephony. Realising these benefits means connecting a VoIP system to an IP network, typically the Internet. The potential benefits are compelling, but there is a real risk of inheriting the Internet’s threats and vulnerabilities along with these benefits. Threats facing the Internet and email are well known, and there are a number of established security vendors with products designed to provide protection. However, the threats are less recognised in the emerging VoIP market, but no less real. These threats include: intrusion attempts, Denial of Service (DOS) attacks that can disrupt the service, content attacks that include unwanted and malicious content (i.e. spam and malware) and a range of application specific attacks including call termination, call redirection, call spoofing and unauthorised call monitoring. Unaddressed, threats to a VoIP system will lead to complete service disruption, loss of confidentiality and integrity of voice services causing significant financial loss and legal liability. The compromise adopted by many VoIP users of confining the service to the protected internal network or forcing remote VoIP sessions to use the corporate VPN is not a viable solution as it negates many of the benefits that VoIP provides. In addition, this is not a scalable solution and requires additional investment which in many cases is greater that the investment needed to fully address the underlying security issues.
